Where the university came from, and what came out of it
Founded in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Society on John D. Rockefeller's endowment, in the Hyde Park neighbourhood the campus still occupies[1]. The university runs on quarters rather than semesters, and the breakthroughs it claims as its own include the mathematical theory of black holes, Carbon-14 dating, the REM sleep cycle and the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, produced by Fermi's team in 1942[2].
Before you choose a major at the University of Chicago, the university has chosen about a third of your courses for you. The Core curriculum takes 15 of the roughly 42 courses in a bachelor's degree[3], taught mostly in discussion sections capped at 19 students[2]. Weigh that first: if you want to specialise from week one, this is the wrong campus; if you want to argue about Thucydides, statistics and molecular biology inside one year, there are few better. The Core also explains what the College looks for. You apply to a single undergraduate College rather than to a school or a faculty, there is no country quota and no published grade cut-off, and your record is read against the school you actually attended[4].

What UChicago does well

From Autumn Quarter 2027, families under 250,000 USD pay no tuition and families under 125,000 USD pay nothing at all[13]. Applicants for 2027 are the first cohort covered.
🧠 The Core gives every graduate the same intellectual base, taught in seminars rather than lectures
Every graduate has argued through the same 15 courses, whatever they majored in, and the College reports a 5:1 student-faculty ratio[1].
🔬 Undergraduates reach real research early, including at two national laboratories the university runs
About 80% of students do research during the College. UChicago manages Argonne National Laboratory and co-manages Fermilab, on more than 600 million USD of sponsored research a year[2].
📈 Graduate outcomes are documented, not implied
Of the Class of 2025, 98% reported an offer of work or graduate study, 71% of those jobs. Law and medical school applicants were admitted at 90%[14].
The UChicago drawbacks worth pricing in
💸 The published cost of attendance is not the full cost of a year
The published on-campus figure leaves out the compulsory health plan, and a class fee sits on top in the first two years. Model the full number before the aid.
🚫 Skip the aid application as an international student and that door shuts permanently
Need-based aid must be requested during admission. Internationals who do not cannot apply later, and international transfer students are ineligible outright[15].
📉 The world rankings disagree loudly here, so do not decide on them
QS World University Rankings 2027 places UChicago 24th, down from 13th a cycle earlier[16], while THE World University Rankings 2026 has it 15th[17]. An eleven-place fall in one table within a year, and a nine-place gap between the two: check the subject tables in your own field before you weigh either.
Who UChicago fits, and who it does not
It suits readers who want breadth rewarded, families whose assessed need will be met in full, and future researchers who will use the Argonne and Fermilab access. It suits you less if you need a vocational qualification on a fixed timetable, or if your budget depends on a predictable discount rather than an assessed one.
Undergraduates belong to the College; research and doctoral work sit in four divisions — Humanities, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences — with seven professional schools alongside, almost all on the same 217-acre Hyde Park campus[1]. Enrolment runs to about 7500 undergraduates and 10500 graduate students, and the university counts 101 Nobel laureates. The professional schools include Chicago Booth, the Law School, Harris Public Policy and the Pritzker School of Medicine; note that the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering is a different school despite the shared name.
The academic year is three quarters — Autumn, Winter and Spring — with an optional summer quarter on top[18]. Residential life is organised into 48 College Houses inside seven halls: a House has its own dining-hall table, its own residential staff and its own traditions, and it is a student's first community on campus. Around that sit more than 450 recognised student organisations, 20 NCAA Division III teams and the Scav Hunt, whose 2023 list ran to 291 items[2].

Programs and how a degree is assembled
A bachelor's degree needs at least 4200 units. The Core accounts for 1500 — 15 courses at 100 units, spanning humanities and arts, civilisation studies, social sciences, mathematics and the sciences, plus language and writing requirements. A major takes 900 to 1900 units, electives fill the rest, and at least 3800 units must come from courses you take rather than exam credit[3]. There are 53 majors and 47 minors[1], a major is declared in the third year, and the College lists more than 60 study abroad programmes[2].
Billing is quarterly, a standard year is three quarters, and the table below is the university's own 2026-27 cost of attendance for an undergraduate on campus — with the two items it leaves out added underneath.
Two warnings. The travel allowance is built for a domestic student — price your own flights from Lagos, Manila, Delhi or Dubai. And the health plan is compulsory unless you waive it with comparable cover by the published deadline. Graduate tuition is set school by school: for 2026-27, 89,976 USD a year at Booth[20], 86,856 USD for the JD[21], 69,570 USD for a full-time MPP[22]. Read the undergraduate table as the price before aid — under the No Barriers thresholds set out below, most of it disappears.

Four application rounds, one Core
The College reads files holistically, admits to one undergraduate programme rather than to a school, and publishes no minimum grade or test score[5]. A CBSE or ISC record, a WAEC profile, Philippine senior high school results, A-levels, the IB and a US diploma are each judged on their own terms. Admitted students in the Class of 2029 scored 1280-1600 on the SAT and 24-36 on the ACT — a spread that describes the pool, not a threshold. Treat the place as a reach whatever your grades.
Pick your round. Early Action and Regular Decision are non-binding; Early Decision I and II commit you to enrol, so use them only when the money is settled.
Build the file on the Common Application or the Coalition Application, whichever you prefer: school report, transcript, teacher recommendations[2].
Write the UChicago supplement — the "Why UChicago?" essay plus one extended essay from the university's deliberately strange prompt list[10]. Give it the most time.
Submit a test score, or English evidence, only if it argues for you.
Tick the need-based aid box, which also removes the application fee, and file the aid application in the same window.
Send the midyear grade report, then reply by your round's date.
Graduate admission differs by school, but the shape holds:
Identify the school and programme first — Booth, Law, Harris, the two Pritzker schools and the four divisions run separate offices and deadlines.
Check which admission test the programme wants: the GRE and the GMAT are the usual ones, and each school sets its own rule.
For doctoral study, approach supervisors before applying. A file naming no research fit rarely survives the first cut.
Assemble transcripts, references, a statement of purpose and a CV, and ask whether the programme wants a credential evaluation.
Apply for funding through the programme: doctoral offers normally carry a package, taught master's degrees do not.

Two systems run in parallel. The larger is need-based: UChicago meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants rather than loans, and international packages combine gift aid with a stipend paid to the student for food, housing and travel[15]. The university reports close to 20 million USD of such aid over four years, and a 35 million USD gift endowing it[23]. One caution: the May 2026 announcement does not say how citizenship interacts with the new income thresholds, so confirm your case with the aid office in writing.
The second system is merit and needs no separate form. Every admitted first-year is considered automatically, judged independently of need and paid as a lump sum, a renewable four-year award or summer funding. A renewable Outstanding International Student Award goes to a few internationals through the same review, though its value is not published — treat it as a bonus, not a budget line. First-generation students receive at least 20,000 USD through the First Phoenix Scholarship[24]. See also our scholarships in the USA guide.
Campus work, internships and OPT
The Office of Career Advancement gives every student a personal counsellor and runs 13 "Careers In" tracks, from computer science and healthcare to journalism and policy. The university says it connects undergraduates with more than 5000 paid internships a year and that 99% complete a substantive internship or research placement[13]. The rest is federal: off-campus work is barred in the first academic year, and the STEM extension to Optional Practical Training needs an employer enrolled in E-Verify.
A rule change landing during this application cycle
Admission for "duration of status" is ending. From 15 September 2026 an F-1 student is admitted for a fixed period tied to the I-20 programme end date, capped at four years, with a 30-day departure window instead of 60; staying longer requires Form I-539. File early if your degree outruns it.
Two documents set your timetable and neither moves quickly: the school transcript in its original language, and a certified English translation of it — our guide to diploma translation covers what "certified" means in practice. The College does not publish a credential-evaluation requirement, but some graduate schools do, so ask the programme before paying for a WES or ECE report. References also work differently from most national systems: US applications expect subject-teacher recommendations plus a counsellor report, both written by the school. Ask a year ahead, and say so in the application if your school has no counsellor role.
Once you accept an offer and document funds, the university issues the I-20 and the visa sequence begins: the SEVIS I-901 fee of 350 USD, the DS-160 with its 185 USD fee, then the interview. There is no federal proof-of-funds figure — the cost of attendance printed on your I-20 sets what you must show. Since 18 June 2025 F visa applicants must also make social media accounts public for vetting[25], and a statutory 250 USD Visa Integrity Fee may apply[26].
What the Core raises for applicants
Can I start in Winter or Spring Quarter instead?
No. First-year admission is to Autumn Quarter only, so split-calendar applicants should plan for a gap before matriculating.
Does UChicago interview applicants?
There is no campus or alumni interview programme. The College offers an optional two-minute video profile, which it recommends, and accepts a Glimpse or InitialView recording in its place.
Will my AP, IB or A-level results shorten the degree?
They can offset specific Core requirements: 5 on most AP exams, 7 on certain IB Higher Level subjects, A-levels the same way. But dual-enrolment credit earned before matriculation does not transfer.
Can I defer and take a gap year after being admitted?
Yes, by request after admission. It involves a non-refundable enrolment fee, for which a waiver exists if paying it would be a hardship.
Are my chances different because I am an international applicant?
The College publishes no international admit rate, and citizenship routes your financial-aid file rather than sorting the admissions pool. There is no quota and no separate track.
Choose UChicago when you want a broad, argumentative undergraduate education before specialising; when research access matters more than a fixed professional pathway; or when your family income sits under the new No Barriers thresholds.
Look elsewhere when you want to start an engineering or professional track in your first quarter instead of after the Core — Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University are the natural comparisons; when you want a smaller undergraduate-first environment, where Princeton University fits better; or when your budget needs predictable merit discounts, in which case a wider search across universities in the USA beats one reach application.
Five checks before you apply: the round is right and a binding Early Decision is financially safe; the aid application goes in the same window; transcript and certified translation are ordered; recommenders agreed months ago; and the budget covers the full year, not the tuition line alone.
